spray paint and oil on canvas

89 x 146 cm

unframed

This artwork embodies the artist's inner urge to reflexively check their mobile device when overwhelmed. Through an abstract approach, this piece references popular mobile applications and games, as evidenced by the enlarged pixels and the shadows that lend them a sense of motion. Bold colours and chromatic aberration create the appearance of movement through an imagined screen. The synthetic quality of the screen is rendered in a liquid and alluring way, yet its fragility and propensity for distortion and glitching become apparent upon closer inspection. The playful squares are suspended above a zig-zag glitch plane, evoking the vastness of digital content that we encounter on our screens. Meanwhile, subtle lighting effects and canvas "wrinkles" serve as a reminder of our physical surroundings. Ultimately, this painting pays tribute to the mobile content that has become a crucial tool for navigating modern life.

"Djuro’s work at first seems a bright and bold venture into a digital world of computer graphics. But the soft colours hide a harder reality. Under their surface is a different world – a manipulative and seductive place of traps and fault lines, disruptive, dangerous and overwhelming. She is interested in the very contemporary tension between the real and virtual worlds, and how our dependence on ever more powerful technology creates confusion between the two."
